Washing machine error codes

What does your washing machine error code mean? These codes come from official manufacturer support documentation. Most are clearable with a drain-filter check, a hose check or a power reset. Pick your brand to see how to fix yours.

LG, Samsung and Whirlpool publish these codes on their own support sites, and the same letters are not a shared standard. LG OE means the washer cannot drain. Samsung 5C (also shown as 5E or nd on some models) is that brand's no-drain code, with its own rules for how far the drain hose may enter the standpipe. Whirlpool F9 E1 is a slow drain, which Whirlpool describes as drain times typically over eight minutes, and it gives a different standpipe height range. A fill code is a different fault: LG IE, Samsung 4C and Whirlpool F8 E1. Suds codes (LG Sud, Samsung SUd, Whirlpool Sud) are usually detergent, not a failed pump. Door codes (LG dE, Samsung dE, Whirlpool F5 E2) mean the washer did not lock the door. Do not mix these up with the dishwasher pages: LG and Samsung use some of the same characters on dishwashers, with different checks. Each code page links the support article it was taken from. Whirlpool F0 E5 is the off-balance code on front-load washers: a load that cannot move freely, or one bulky item washed alone. It is not the slow-drain code F9 E1.

Codes we cover

AELG · washing machine

Leakage error: the washer has detected a water leak inside the appliance and its anti-flood safety switch has been activated.

CELG · washing machine

Motor over-current error: there is an over-current in the motor's electrical circuit.

CLLG · washing machine

Child Lock is on: LG says CL is not an error code. Child Lock is active, so the control panel is disabled and settings cannot be adjusted.

dELG · washing machine

Door error: the door is not closed properly, so the washer could not lock it.

dE2LG · washing machine

Door closed but not locked: the washer detects the door as closed, but it did not lock.

FELG · washing machine

Overfill error: too much water has entered the drum. The drain pump runs to prevent leaks.

FFLG · washing machine

Freeze failure: the temperature inside the washer has dropped below 1°C (about 34°F), so water in the drain or inlet hoses may be frozen. The washer will not start until it warms above 4°C (about 39°F).

IELG · washing machine

Water inlet error: the tub did not fill to an adequate level within the set time.

LELG · washing machine

Motor error: the tub failed to spin, so the motor cannot operate properly.

OELG · washing machine

Drain error: the washer is unable to drain the water used during the wash cycle.

PELG · washing machine

Water level sensor error: LG says the PE code indicates that the washer's water level sensor is malfunctioning.

PFLG · washing machine

Power failure: LG says PF means the power supply to the washer was interrupted during a cycle, for example by a power outage.

SudLG · washing machine

Excess suds detected: the washer adds a suds-reducing cycle (about 2 hours extra) and, if suds appear during spinning, stops to help prevent leaking.

tCLLG · washing machine

Tub Clean reminder: it is time to run the Tub Clean cycle. This is a maintenance reminder, not a fault.

tELG · washing machine

Heating error: usually caused by a faulty thermistor (the washer's water temperature sensor).

UELG · washing machine

Unbalanced load error: laundry is piled on one side of the drum and the washer could not even it out.

vSLG · washing machine

Vibration sensor error: LG says vS (shown as u5 or uS on some displays) indicates a potential issue with the vibration sensor, due to a contact problem or a sensor malfunction.

3CSamsung · washing machine

Motor error: Samsung lists 3C, 3E, E3 and 1 3C as a motor error. On some models 3E is a voltage error instead, so check your user manual.

4CSamsung · washing machine

Not filling error: water is not entering the washer correctly.

4C2Samsung · washing machine

Hot/cold error: the water from the cold supply is extremely hot because the supply hoses are swapped.

5CSamsung · washing machine

No drain error: water is not draining from the washer at the correct speed, or at all.

9C1Samsung · washing machine

Power supply (voltage) error: there is an irregularity in the electrical current reaching the washer.

bE2Samsung · washing machine

Jammed button error: a button on the control panel is detected as stuck or continuously pressed.

dESamsung · washing machine

Door error: the washer does not detect the door as closed and locked.

LCSamsung · washing machine

Water level or leakage error: moisture is detected somewhere it should not be, or there is an issue with the sensor itself.

SUdSamsung · washing machine

Excessive suds error: the washer detected over-sudsing and stops for a short period to let the suds dissipate, then continues the cycle automatically.

UESamsung · washing machine

Unbalanced load error: the load is unbalanced inside the tub. Ur means the washer will add water, try to rebalance the load and retry the spin; Ur does not mean there is a problem.

F0 E5Whirlpool · washing machine

Off balance: an unbalanced load can lengthen the cycle and leave clothes dripping.

F5 E2Whirlpool · washing machine

Door error: the door is not locking properly.

F7 E1Whirlpool · washing machine

Motor speed sensing error: the motor cannot reach the correct speed for the selected cycle.

F8 E1Whirlpool · washing machine

Low water flow: the washer is sensing a low flow of water.

F8 E2Whirlpool · washing machine

Dispenser system problem: the detergent drawer or detergent cartridge may be clogged.

F9 E1Whirlpool · washing machine

Slow drain: drain times are longer than expected, typically over eight minutes.

LOCWhirlpool · washing machine

Control Lock is on. It is a lockout of the controls, not a mechanical fault.

SudWhirlpool · washing machine

Too many suds: the washer cannot spin out water with excess suds, so it extends the rinse and pauses tumbling to let the bubbles break.
