A fill code means water did not enter the tub in the time the washer allows, or the flow was too low. LG calls that IE, Samsung calls it 4C, and Whirlpool calls low flow F8 E1. Samsung 4C2 is a different message: the hot and cold hoses are swapped. Start with the faucets and the hoses, which is where all three brands start.
This guide names Washer water inlet hoses. The button opens an Amazon search, not a listing chosen for your model.

Fill codes versus drain codes
A washer that sits empty and a washer that sits full of water are opposite faults, and they use different codes. If the tub is full and will not empty, use the drain guide. This page is for the codes that mean water is not coming in, or is coming in on the wrong temperature.
| Code | Meaning on that brand’s support page |
|---|---|
| LG IE | Water inlet error: the tub did not fill to an adequate level within the set time. Some models show E02 or E10. |
| Samsung 4C | Not filling: water is not entering the washer correctly. Some models show 1 4C, nF or 4E. |
| Samsung 4C2 | The water from the cold supply is extremely hot because the supply hoses are swapped. Some models show 4E2, CE, 14C2 or nF1. |
| Whirlpool F8 E1 | Low water flow. Some models show LO FL. |
None of these pages ask you to replace the water-inlet valve as a first step. LG says a valve fault is possible only if the hose, faucet and inlet-screen checks do not fix IE. Samsung says to request service if 4C continues after its checks. Whirlpool says to contact them if F8 E1 returns.
Shared checks, different details
All three brands look at the same plumbing, in plain language:
- The household water supply has to be on. A closed faucet, a shutoff under the laundry sink, or a municipal outage all look like a bad washer.
- The supply hoses cannot be kinked. A washer walks during spin and can pinch a hose against the wall. LG says to unfold a hose that the machine has bent. Whirlpool says to check that the inlet hoses are not kinked. Samsung says the same, and adds that the hoses must be on the correct inlets.
- Screens where the hose meets the washer catch rust, sand and bits of sealant from the house piping. LG and Samsung both describe cleaning those screens. Whirlpool’s F8 E1 page does not. Do not pull a screen the manual you are following never mentions.
Close the taps before you disconnect a hose. Open them fully again after the hose is back on. A valve that is “mostly open” is a cause Whirlpool and Samsung both name.
LG IE
LG’s causes are a supply that is cut off, a faucet that is off, a hose that is not connected, a hose that is pressed or bent, a hose or faucet frozen in cold weather, and a possible fault in the water supply valve if the checks fail.
The steps LG lists:
- Confirm the supply hose is connected to the faucet and the faucet is open. LG says to turn it anti-clockwise to open.
- Unfold a hose that is pressed or bent. Spinning is what bends it; the washer shifts on the floor.
- In freezing weather, disconnect the hose from the washer and open the faucet to see whether water comes out. If it does not, wrap a towel soaked in hot water around the faucet for 5 minutes, and thaw the disconnected hose with warm water at 50°C (122°F) or lower. Reconnect only when the hose is completely free of ice. That temperature cap is LG’s. Do not use boiling water on the hose.
- Clean the water supply filter. Turn the faucet off, separate the hose end, pull the filter out with your fingers or pincers, remove rust, sand or stones, and put the filter back before you reconnect the hose.
If IE remains after those checks, LG says the water supply valve may be malfunctioning and to request service. The valve is a powered part. Leave it on the machine.
Samsung 4C and 4C2
Samsung separates “no water” from “water on the wrong temperature.”
4C, not filling. Causes on the support page: hot and cold hoses on the wrong inlets, or hot not connected at all (the error can appear even on a cycle labeled Cold); hoses bent or kinked; water valves not fully open; the drain hose not inserted properly or kinked; debris blocking the inlet filters.
The order Samsung gives:
- Put hot to hot and cold to cold, and make sure the hoses are not bent or kinked. Samsung says not to use Flood Safe hoses.
- Open the water valves completely and leave them open while the washer runs.
- Check the drain hose as well. Samsung includes it on the fill page: inserted properly, not kinked, and 6 to 8 inches into the drain pipe. Do not remove the screw on the back that holds the drain hose. A drain hose that is sealed into the standpipe can interfere with how the washer manages water, which is why it appears on a fill code and on 5C.
- Unplug the washer, or flip its breaker, for 1 minute. Restore power and try a cycle.
- To look for debris, turn the supply valves off, disconnect the hoses from the back of the washer, look inside the connections and carefully clean the filters. Open the valves fully after you reconnect.
If 4C continues, Samsung says to request service through its Support Center.
4C2, hoses swapped. The only cause Samsung lists is the cold supply connected to the hot inlet and the hot supply connected to the cold inlet. The fix is to connect cold to cold and hot to hot, typically blue to blue and red to red. Samsung says this code does not indicate that service is needed. If the water on the cold side is genuinely hot because the house plumbing is crossed, that is a plumbing problem, not a washer part.
The hose colors and the Flood Safe warning are also on the inlet hose page, taken from the same support articles.
Whirlpool F8 E1
Whirlpool’s meaning is low water flow: the washer is sensing a low flow of water. Display may show F8 E1 or LO FL.
Causes: household water supply or the hot and cold faucets not fully open; kinked water inlet hoses; anti-flood hoses or controls in the water line.
Steps:
- Check that the household supply is on and that both the cold and the hot faucets or valves are fully open. Both, not only the one the cycle name suggests.
- Check that the inlet hoses are not kinked.
- Check there are no anti-flood hoses or controls in the line connected to the washer. Whirlpool names those devices specifically. If the house has them, the F8 E1 page is telling you they can be the restriction.
- Press Pause or Cancel twice and Power once to clear the code.
If the code returns, Whirlpool says to contact them or schedule service. There is a different dispenser code, F8 E2, for a clogged detergent drawer. That is not a fill-flow code. It is covered with detergent problems in the suds guide.
Freezing, outages and a code that is not IE
A whole-house outage looks like IE or 4C or F8 E1 on every faucet, not only the washer. Check a tap before you take the washer apart. LG’s dishwasher IE page makes the same point for that appliance: check whether the kitchen and bathroom taps have water. The washer IE page says the supply may be cut off.
In freezing weather, only LG’s washer IE page gives the thawing method quoted above, including the 50°C limit. Do not apply that number to a Samsung or Whirlpool hose unless that brand’s page says the same thing. It does not, on the pages we publish.
If an LG washer shows FF instead of IE, the washer itself has dropped below 1°C (about 34°F). LG says its controls stay disabled until it warms above 4°C (about 39°F), and the FF page has LG’s warm-water method for thawing the drum and drain pump before you get to the hoses.
When to stop
Stop if water is leaking at a fitting you just reconnected, if the inlet screen is damaged, or if the code returns after the faucets are fully open and the hoses are straight. The inlet valve is electrically operated. Replacing it means moving the washer, disconnecting powered parts, and matching a valve to the model. That is service work once the published checks are done.
The shop button on this page searches Amazon for washing machine water inlet hoses. It does not search for inlet valves on purpose. Match any hose to the fittings on your washer and your valves, and follow your brand’s note on Flood Safe or anti-flood hoses.
Safety first: Unplug the washer and close both water taps before you disconnect a hose or pull an inlet screen. A screen under pressure will spray. Never bypass the door lock to watch the tub fill. Valve and control-board repairs belong to a qualified appliance technician.
Unplug the appliance or switch it off at the breaker, and turn off the water supply where relevant, before you open any panel. Capacitors can hold a charge after power is off. Gas, electrical-panel, refrigerant and carbon-monoxide work belongs to a licensed professional. Follow the manual for your model (safety terms).
FAQ
Why does Samsung 4C appear on a Cold cycle?
Samsung says the error can appear even on cycles labeled Cold if the hot hose is not connected or the hoses are on the wrong inlets. Both supplies have to be connected correctly.
What is Samsung 4C2?
4C2 means the water from the cold supply is extremely hot because the hoses are swapped. Samsung says to connect cold to cold and hot to hot, typically blue to blue and red to red, and that this code does not indicate that service is needed.
Are Flood Safe or anti-flood hoses a problem?
Samsung's 4C steps say not to use Flood Safe hoses. Whirlpool's F8 E1 steps say to check there are no anti-flood hoses or controls in the water line. Follow the page for your brand.
