A door code means the washer did not detect the door as closed and locked, so it will not fill or spin. LG, Samsung and Whirlpool each start with something caught in the door and a door that is not fully shut. A bent latch or a lock that fails after that check is a service call. Do not bypass the lock.
What the lock is doing
A front-load washer will not fill or spin until the control confirms the door is closed and the lock has thrown. That is so a tub of water cannot open onto the floor, and so a spinning drum is not an open hole. When the lock does not report back, the control shows a door code and waits. The code is not a suggestion. The brands below tell you to find what is keeping the door from closing, and they tell you to get service if the latch is bent or the code returns. None of them tell you to jumper the lock switch.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| LG dE | Door error: the door is not closed properly, so the washer could not lock it. Some models show dE1 or E01. |
| LG dE2 | The door is detected closed, but it did not lock. Some models show E30. |
| Samsung dE | The washer does not detect the door as closed and locked. Many alternate characters are listed on the code page, including dS, FL, LO, dE1 and dE2. |
| Whirlpool F5 E2 | The door is not locking properly. |
Read every character. Samsung warns that on some models dC is an unbalanced load, not a door fault. If your manual says dC is unbalance, follow Samsung UE and the unbalanced-load guide instead of taking the door apart.
LG dE and dE2
dE, dE1 or E01 means the door is not closed properly, so the lock never got a chance. LG’s causes are laundry caught between the door and the rubber gasket, and a door that is not fully closed.
Steps:
- Open the door and close it again. Look around the whole gasket, including the bottom, for a sock or a strap.
- Reset: power the washer off, unplug it or flip the breaker, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds with the power off, then restore power and try again.
If dE, dE1 or E01 continues after that reset, LG says service will be required.
dE2 or E30 is the next case. The washer believes the door is closed, and the lock still did not engage. Causes LG lists: the washer is overloaded, items are caught between the door and the gasket, or the door latch is bent or broken.
Steps:
- Check the door area for anything that stops the door closing securely.
- Open and re-close the door.
- Use the same START/PAUSE reset as dE: power off, unplug or flip the breaker, hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds, restore power.
If dE2 or E30 persists, request LG service. LG says a bent or broken latch needs repair. Do not bend a latch back. A latch that almost catches will fail again during spin, which is worse than a washer that refuses to start.
An overloaded tub can also show UE or LE. LE is a motor error LG ties to an overload, a coin stuck in the tub, or a temporary fault. The LE steps are to unplug for 5 minutes, reduce the load, and look for a foreign object. That is a different code from dE2, even though both can follow an overstuffed drum. Use the code on the display.
Samsung dE
Samsung’s meaning is that the washer does not detect the door as closed and locked. The cause list is longer than LG’s:
- Laundry or another item caught in the door.
- Door not fully closed and secured.
- Door latch not securely fixed.
- Damaged door or latch.
- Child Lock on, with water in the tub. Samsung says the code can appear even when no cycle is running.
- On FlexWash washers, display 1dC4: the rubber button next to the upper washer’s latch is missing.
Steps Samsung publishes:
- Check that nothing is caught, then close the door firmly so it is secured.
- Check that the latch is securely fixed.
- If Child Lock is on and there is water in the tub, close the door or turn Child Lock off within 30 seconds. Otherwise the washer will drain the tub. That 30-second window is Samsung’s. Do not spend it pulling on the handle.
- FlexWash 1dC4: Samsung says replacing the missing rubber button next to the upper washer’s latch fixes the error, and that service is not needed for that specific case.
- If the characters are dC and your manual defines dC as unbalance, rearrange the load and restart. Do not treat it as a latch fault.
- If the problem is the opposite, a door stuck locked: make sure the cycle has finished and drained, and wait for the door lock light to go off. Samsung says front-load models keep the door locked while water is detected inside. Draining is the 5C problem if the tub will not empty. Fix the drain, and the lock has a reason to release.
If the code cannot be corrected, or the door or latch is damaged, Samsung says to request service.
Whirlpool F5 E2
Whirlpool’s meaning is simply that the door is not locking properly. Causes: an item blocking the door, or the door not closing completely.
Steps:
- Check that no items are blocking the door and that it closes completely.
- Press Pause or Cancel twice and Power once to clear the code.
If the code returns, Whirlpool says to check the owner’s manual for your model, contact Whirlpool, or schedule service. There is no latch-replacement procedure on the page we publish.
Why there is no shop button
A door lock assembly is model-specific, it is wired into the control, and the support pages above do not tell a homeowner to buy one. Shipping the first “washer door lock” a search returns is how a code that was a sock in the gasket becomes a washer that will not run at all. This guide does not carry an Amazon button. If a later repair quote names a latch, match the part number on the quote to the model tag, which is a different task from clearing dE tonight.
The level and wrench page is for codes that mention level, such as LG UE and Samsung 5C. It is not a door-lock tool. Do not pull the washer out to level it because the door code is on. Close the door first.
Resets are not a repair
Each brand publishes one reset: LG’s five-second START/PAUSE hold with power removed, Samsung’s Child Lock timing, Whirlpool’s Pause/Cancel twice and Power once. Doing that reset ten times does not reseat a bent strike. If the first reset and a clear gasket do not hold through a cycle, the pages say service.
Also do not unplug the washer in the middle of a fill to “unlock” it, then plug it back in and pull the door. You can leave a tub of water against a lock that the control still considers shut. Samsung’s instruction for a stuck door is to let it drain and wait for the lock light. If it will not drain, follow the drain code, with the power and the taps off before you open a pump filter.
Related codes that are not the door
- LG LE is the motor, including a coin in the tub. The door can be locked normally the whole time.
- LG CE is motor over-current. LG’s homeowner step is to unplug for 10 seconds and try one cycle. If it persists, close the tap, unplug, and request repair. It is not a door code.
- Samsung bE2 is a jammed button on the control panel, not the door latch.
- LG washer CL means Child Lock is on and the panel is disabled. It is not a door that failed to lock. LG says to power the washer on and hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds. On some models that control is two buttons, and LG says to use the pair named in that model’s manual. LG dishwasher CL is the same kind of lock on a dishwasher. For that one, LG names Half Load and Energy Saver, held together for at least 3 seconds. Do not use the dishwasher pair on the washer. tCL is a different display: the Tub Clean reminder, not Child Lock.
Safety first: Never bypass, tape or wedge a washer door lock. Unplug the washer before you look behind it. If the door is damaged or the glass is cracked, stop and request service. Do not run a cycle.
Unplug the appliance or switch it off at the breaker, and turn off the water supply where relevant, before you open any panel. Capacitors can hold a charge after power is off. Gas, electrical-panel, refrigerant and carbon-monoxide work belongs to a licensed professional. Follow the manual for your model (safety terms).
FAQ
Why does the door stay locked when the cycle is over?
Samsung says front-load models keep the door locked while water is detected inside. Wait until the cycle has finished and drained and the door lock light goes off. Forcing the lock can bend the latch, which is one of Samsung's causes for dE.
What does Samsung dC mean?
On some models dC means an unbalanced load, not a door error. Samsung says to check the user manual. If it is the unbalanced-load code, untangle the laundry and restart. Door-error characters on other models include dE, dS, FL, LO and dE1.
Is there a part to buy for a door code?
Not from these pages. The published checks are to clear the gasket, close the door, and reset. A bent or broken latch is a repair. This guide has no shop button for that reason.
