What it is
The circulator blower moves air over the heat exchanger and through the ducts. Goodman (EE3), Carrier (13), Rheem (61) and Trane (E04) list a failed or wrong-speed blower, a loose blower wheel or a motor that tripped on its thermal limit among the causes.
How to choose
- Motors differ by horsepower, speed taps or electronically commutated (ECM) design, rotation and mounting. Use the part number on the motor label or in your manual.
- Check airflow first: a dirty filter or blower wheel is a far cheaper fix than a motor.
How it is tested
- Check the filter and the blower wheel for dirt. Rheem notes a motor can trip on thermal limit because of a restriction or bearing failure.
- Goodman says to check circulator blower speed and performance, correcting the speed or replacing the motor if necessary: technician work.
Replacing it
- Replacement involves line voltage and, on many motors, the capacitor. Leave it to a technician.
Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
