What it is
Goodman's service manual describes a run capacitor as wired across the auxiliary and main windings of a single-phase permanent split capacitor motor, with the job of reducing line current while improving motor torque. A failed capacitor can stop a motor starting.
Carrier lists a defective blower motor or capacitor for furnace code 13, and Goodman lists a failed run capacitor for AC codes 02/L2 and 04.
How to choose
- The capacitor label gives microfarads (MFD or µF) and a voltage rating. Match both to the old part and to your manual.
- Dual-run capacitors serve two motors; follow the wiring diagram on the unit rather than guessing terminals.
How it is tested
- Goodman's manual describes a resistance check and a capacitance check with a digital multimeter, and says to discharge the capacitor through a 200 to 300 ohm resistor before handling it.
- It says that a reading significantly lower than the printed value, or none at all, means the capacitor is dead and must be replaced.
- The manual states it is for qualified, professionally trained HVAC technicians only.
Replacing it
- Goodman's manual warns of high voltage and multiple power sources and says to disconnect all power before servicing. We recommend a technician does this work.
Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
