AC and heat pump coil cleaning supplies

Why Carrier and Goodman AC codes tell you to check the coils for debris or ice, and the soft-touch supplies for gentle cleaning.

Updated

What it is

Carrier's service manual says to check the outdoor coil for clogging by ice or debris, and clean or de-ice it if necessary, for its high and low pressure faults (31, 32, 83 and 84). Goodman's manual says to check and clean the condenser coil for its L2 high-side fault.

How to choose

  • Follow your manual for how it says to clean the coil and avoid anything that bends the fins.
  • A fin comb can straighten lightly bent fins; the comb has to match the fin spacing, so measure it before buying.
  • Use a product labelled for the coil type.

How it is tested

  • Look at the outdoor coil for leaves, cottonwood, grass clippings or ice.

How to use it

  • Turn off the outdoor disconnect and the breaker before cleaning. Clear loose debris gently. Do not open panels or touch electrical parts.
Safety firstOutdoor units carry line voltage. Switch off the disconnect and the breaker first. Refrigerant and electrical work belong to a licensed technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
