How it shows: 7-segment display on an American Standard S9V2 two-stage variable-speed furnace: E3.2

American Standard S9V2 E3.2 is an open 1st stage pressure switch. In the heating sequence the inducer starts and pressure switch 1 is supposed to close. The guide also says that if a thermal limit is open, 24 volts will not be present at either pressure switch, and that pressure-switch tubing has to rise so flue condensate does not run into the switch. E3.4 is the open 2nd stage switch, and low stage can still run on that one.

Likely causes

  • 1st stage pressure switch did not close

Safe checks for E3.2

  1. The heating sequence says the inducer starts and pressure switch 1 should then close. If a thermal limit is open, the guide says 24 VAC will not be present at either pressure switch
  2. The install steps say pressure-switch tubing must rise so condensed flue gas does not enter the switch
  3. Techniciancheck the 1st stage pressure switch, its tubing and the inducer
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician if E3.2 remains. First-stage heat will not prove until that switch closes.
