What does American Standard E7.1 mean?

The 1st stage gas valve (MVL) is energized when it should be off.

How it shows: 7-segment display on an American Standard S9V2 two-stage variable-speed furnace: E7.1

American Standard S9V2 E7.1 means the 1st stage gas valve, marked MVL, is energized when it should be off. E2.3 is the opposite problem: the valve was not energized when it should have been. If you smell gas with E7.1 on the display, leave and call the gas supplier from outside.

Likely causes

  • 1st stage gas valve energized with no call for it to be on

Safe checks for E7.1

  1. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas supplier from outside
  2. Techniciancheck why the 1st stage gas valve is energized when the control says it should be off
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician. Do not cycle the furnace to see if a gas valve that is powered at the wrong time clears itself.
