What does American Standard E09 mean?

Open inducer limit switch, or open condensate pressure switch.

How it shows: 7-segment display on an American Standard S9V2 two-stage variable-speed furnace: E09

American Standard S9V2 E09 is an open inducer limit switch or an open condensate pressure switch. The heating sequence will not start the inducer until both are proved closed, so the burners never reach ignition. It is not E3.2, the 1st stage pressure switch that proves inducer draft. A frozen condensate line belongs in this technician check, not in a jumper.

Likely causes

  • Inducer limit switch open
  • Condensate pressure switch open

Safe checks for E09

  1. The heating sequence will not start the inducer until the condensate pressure switch and the inducer limit switch are proved closed
  2. Techniciancheck the inducer limit and the condensate pressure switch, including the condensate drain path those switches watch
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician. E09 stops the heating cycle before ignition. A frozen or blocked condensate line is a technician diagnosis on this control.
