What does American Standard E05 mean?

Flame was detected when it should not be present.

How it shows: 7-segment display on an American Standard S9V2 two-stage variable-speed furnace: E05

American Standard S9V2 E05 means flame was detected when it should not be present. E08 is different: flame current is low but the furnace is still allowed to run. E7.1 is the 1st stage gas valve energized when it should be off. If E05 is on the display and you smell gas, leave. Do not keep resetting it.

Likely causes

  • Flame detected with no call for flame

Safe checks for E05

  1. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas supplier from outside
  2. Technicianthe display code is flame present when it should not be. This is not the low-flame code E08
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician before using the furnace. E05 means the control saw flame at the wrong time.
