Drain hose rules from LG, Samsung and Whirlpool: kinks, how far into the standpipe, the U-shaped form and standpipe height.

Updated

What it is

A kinked, clogged or incorrectly installed drain hose is the first cause LG (OE), Samsung (5C, which it calls the most common reason) and Whirlpool (F9 E1) list for drain faults.

How to choose

  • Match length and end fitting to the old hose or your manual.
  • Whirlpool says to use the U-shaped drain hose form on the hose.

How it is tested

  • Samsung: the hose should go no less than 6 and no more than 8 inches into the standpipe or sink, be secured so it cannot slip lower and not form an airtight seal.
  • Whirlpool gives the standpipe height as 39 inches minimum and 96 inches maximum.
  • Samsung says not to remove the screw on the back that holds the drain hose against the washer.

Replacing it

  • Unplug the washer and turn off the taps. Place a pan under the connection, replace the hose and check the connections for leaks on the next cycle.
Safety firstUnplug the washer and turn off the water before touching any hose.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
