What does Goodman EAL mean?

R-32 sensor reports a refrigerant leak: heating stops and only the fan runs while the furnace is in mitigation mode. The chart says normal operation returns once a leak is not detected and the 5-minute delay is over.

How it shows: 7-segment display on a *R9S96, *D9S96 or *R9S92 single-stage furnace in IOG-2037B: EAL

Likely causes

  • R-32 sensor reports a refrigerant leak, so the furnace stays in mitigation mode

Safe checks for EAL

  1. If heat has stopped and only the fan is running, write down EAL and leave the panels on
  2. Technicianthe chart says to investigate the indoor coil for a refrigerant leak. The furnace resumes normal operation once a leak is not detected and the 5-minute delay is over
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician. A refrigerant leak is not a filter change or a breaker reset.
