How it shows: Dishwasher display shows 4C (also shown as 4E on some models)

Same characters, different appliance: Samsung 4C on a washing machine is a different fault. Samsung washing machine 4C.

Likely causes

  • Household water pressure outside Samsung's 20 to 120 psi range (below 20 psi can make the water supply valve fail and stop it shutting off properly)
  • Hot water supply outside the 120 to 149°F (49 to 65°C) range Samsung specifies
  • A problem with the supply line feeding the dishwasher (Samsung says supply line issues can cause error codes or blinking lights)

How to fix 4C: safe DIY steps

  1. Troubleshoot before you reset: Samsung warns that clearing the code without fixing the cause can make it return
  2. Check the hot water supply temperature: Samsung specifies 120 to 149°F (49 to 65°C) and says it should not exceed 149°F to avoid severe burns
  3. Check that your home's water pressure is between 20 and 120 psi
  4. Inspect the supply line and its connections. Samsung recommends a stainless steel supply line (sold separately, up to 10 ft) and a 90-degree elbow with 1/2-inch NPT on one end and a 3/8-inch compression fitting on the other
  5. On models without a digital display, a blinking Auto or Express 60 light can mean the same thing: water pressure or temperature is not correct
  6. If temperature and pressure are within range and the error still occurs, switch off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker and request Samsung service
Safety firstSwitch the dishwasher off at its breaker before you reach into the base or remove a filter or cover, and let the tub and water cool after a cycle. Watch for sharp debris. Pump, heater, valve and control-board repairs belong to a qualified appliance technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

If your water temperature and pressure meet Samsung's requirements and the error keeps returning, Samsung says to switch off the dishwasher at the breaker and request service.
