What does GE C6 mean?

Water temperature is too low: the water coming into the dishwasher is below the 120°F GE requires.

How it shows: Dishwasher display shows C6

Likely causes

  • Incoming hot water below 120°F (GE's range is 120°F minimum, 150°F maximum)
  • Cold water sitting in the pipe between the water heater and the dishwasher, especially when the water heater is far away
  • Water heater set too low
  • Hot water being used for showers or the washing machine while the dishwasher fills
  • Dishwasher hooked to the cold water line instead of the hot line (GE says a dishwasher cannot heat cold water up to 120°F)

How to fix C6: safe DIY steps

  1. Check the water temperature: turn on the hot faucet nearest the dishwasher, put a candy or meat thermometer in a glass and let the water run into it until the reading stops rising (one minute or more). It should read between 120°F and 150°F
  2. Before starting the dishwasher, run the hot water at the sink next to it until it comes out hot, to purge cold water from the line
  3. If the water never reaches 120°F, the water heater temperature may need to be adjusted (follow the water heater maker's instructions)
  4. Don't run the washing machine or take showers while the dishwasher is running
  5. Use cycle options that make the dishwasher run longer and add more heat, if your model has them
  6. Check under the sink that the dishwasher is connected to the hot water line, not the cold line
Safety firstSwitch the dishwasher off at its breaker before you reach into the base or remove a filter or cover, and let the tub and water cool after a cycle. Watch for sharp debris. Pump, heater, valve and control-board repairs belong to a qualified appliance technician. Water near 150°F can scald: test it in a glass, not with your hand.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

GE says that if switching power off for a minute or two does not clear a code, service may be required. C7 is a different fault: GE says it means the water temperature sensor circuit has stopped working.
