What does GE C4 mean?

The machine filled twice after a power failure: float switch stuck or failed, or clogged drain or sump.

How it shows: Dishwasher display shows C4

Likely causes

  • Stuck or failed float switch
  • Clogged drain or sump

How to fix C4: safe DIY steps

  1. Touch Start and then Cancel/Reset
  2. Tap on the float cover to un-stick the float (the plastic cover that looks like an upside-down cup in the front left corner of the tub floor)
  3. Check the sump area at the back bottom of the tub for debris (it looks like an upside-down silverware basket and can become clogged)
Safety firstSwitch the dishwasher off at its breaker before you reach into the base or remove a filter or cover, and let the tub and water cool after a cycle. Watch for sharp debris. Pump, heater, valve and control-board repairs belong to a qualified appliance technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
