The normally closed rollout switch has opened. The rollout control is manually reset. The control enters a hard lockout, and power has to be cycled off and on only after the problem is corrected.
York TG9S 5 red flashes means the rollout switch opened. It is a manual-reset switch and a hard lockout. The manual says to check combustion air, inducer operation, and the primary heat exchanger or burners, then cycle power only after that problem is corrected. Do not reset the switch to get through the night. Four red flashes is the main limit, which can be a dirty filter. Five red flashes is not that filter step.
Likely causes
- Combustion air problem
- Inducer not operating properly
- Primary heat exchanger failure or a burner problem
Safe checks for 5 red flashes
- Turn the furnace off at its switch or the breaker and leave it off. Do not reset the rollout switch and turn the furnace back on
- Techniciancheck combustion air, inducer operation, and the primary heat exchanger or burners before the rollout switch is reset
Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
When to call a pro
Call a licensed HVAC technician before the furnace is used again. A rollout switch means flame left the burner area.
