What does Bosch E23 mean?

Drain pump problem: Bosch says E23 indicates an issue with the drain pump, which happens when the pump is blocked, clogged, or faulty.

How it shows: Dishwasher display shows E23

Likely causes

  • A blocked or clogged drain pump
  • A faulty drain pump

Safe checks for E23

  1. Bosch's only published step for E23 is to contact Bosch Customer Support (1-800-944-2904)
  2. Have your dishwasher model number ready before you call, as Bosch asks
  3. To clear the code after the repair, Bosch's general reset is to turn the dishwasher off (or switch off its breaker), wait about 1 minute, turn it back on and run a short empty test cycle
Safety firstSwitch the dishwasher off at its breaker before you reach into the base or remove a filter or cover, and let the tub and water cool after a cycle. Watch for sharp debris. Pump, heater, valve and control-board repairs belong to a qualified appliance technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Bosch routes E23 straight to Customer Support rather than giving homeowner steps. Not the same as E24 or E25: Bosch gives E24 (drain filter blocked) and E25 (drain pump blocked, or its cover loose or missing) their own homeowner checks, while E23 points at the pump itself being blocked, clogged or faulty.
