Basic checks first: jump to safe DIY steps Equipment type: furnace
How it shows: Amber status LED on a Carrier 59SC5: 1 short flash, then 1 long flash (code 11)
Likely causes
- The control has no stored fault to display
How to fix 11: safe DIY steps
- Count 1 short flash and 1 long flash. Code 11 means there is no stored fault, not that a part has failed
- The troubleshooting chart in the same manual says to run the system through a heating or cooling cycle to check it. Stored codes are erased after 72 hours
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.
Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
When to call a pro
Call a licensed HVAC technician if the furnace still will not heat or cool after a full cycle. Code 11 itself is not a failed part. A flash pattern other than 11 is the fault to look up.
