Outdoor air temperature sensor fault. If this sensor fails, the manual says defrost is initiated from coil temperature and time. There is no reset time on this row.
Bryant outdoor 53 is an outdoor air temperature sensor fault. Causes are a harness not plugged into the outdoor control, a broken or loose harness wire, a broken or damaged sensor, and hardware damage to the outdoor control. If that sensor fails, the manual says defrost is started from coil temperature and time instead. It is not a charge code. Code 55 is the coil temperature sensor.
Likely causes
- Sensor harness not connected to the outdoor control
- Broken or loose harness wire
- Broken or damaged sensor
- Hardware damage to the outdoor control
Safe checks for 53
- Count 5 short flashes and 3 long flashes. A heat pump that defrosts on a different schedule after this code is the failover the manual describes, not a reason to add refrigerant
- Technicianseat the plug, check harness continuity against the resistance chart, and replace the outdoor control only if its hardware is damaged
Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
