What does Navien E016 mean?
Overheating of the heat exchanger.
Call a pro: jump to when to call a pro Equipment type: tankless water heater
How it shows: Front panel on an NPE-2 condensing tankless water heater (NPE-180A2, NPE-210A2, NPE-240A2 and the S2 models)
Likely causes
- Cold water inlet filter needs cleaning
- Heat exchanger needs flushing
Safe checks for E016
- Clean the cold water inlet filter the way section 4.4 describes: drain the heater, rinse the filter with cold running water, and reinstall it
- The same row says to flush the heat exchanger using the procedure in section 4.3, which uses the service valves and a circulation pump. If that kit is not already set up, stop and call a technician
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not try to light the water heater, do not touch an electrical switch, and do not use a phone in the building. Leave and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off power at the breaker and shut the gas supply before any panel comes off. Gas pressure, the burner, the gas valve, venting and the control board belong to a licensed technician or the manufacturer's technical support.
Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
When to call a pro
Overheating is not a temperature-knob problem. If cleaning the inlet filter does not clear E016, have a licensed technician flush the heat exchanger or call Navien Technical Support at 1-800-519-8794.
