Rheem 58: Water circuit open

Source: Rheem manual (PDF) (opens in a new tab) ↗ · Updated

Status code58Rheem
What does Rheem 58 mean?

Water circuit open. The control cannot see continuity between pins 1 and 2 of connector P4, so it does not see both water sensors. Gas heat will not run. Other modes, such as cooling, should.

How it shows: Dual 7-segment display on a Rheem R96V / (-)96V furnace (installation instructions 92-24161-124-03): 58

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring between the control and a water sensor
  • Connector P4 or a sensor connector not seated
  • A water sensor has been removed

Safe checks for 58

  1. Write down 58. It is not 59. Code 59 means water was sensed in the collector box. Code 58 means the sensor circuit is open
  2. Technicianrepair or replace the wiring, reseat P4 and the sensor connectors, and replace a missing water sensor
Safety firstIf you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch or use a phone in the building; leave immediately and call your gas supplier from outside. Turn off electrical power at the furnace switch or breaker before opening any panel, and never bypass or jumper a limit, rollout or pressure switch. Gas valve, burner, venting, wiring and control-board work should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.

When to call a pro

Call a licensed HVAC technician. 58 is an open water-sensor circuit, not a clogged drain.
