Nut driver set

Why nut drivers suit appliance and furnace panels, which sizes a common set covers and what insulated means.

Updated

What it is

Hex-head screws hold the panels and many parts in furnaces, outdoor units and appliances. A nut driver grips the screw head and is less likely to strip it than pliers or a screwdriver. A 7-piece set is a common starting point; the Klein 647M listing gives sizes 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16 and 1/2 inch.

How to choose

  • Magnetic tips keep fasteners from dropping into the cabinet.
  • Klein states its 647M set is not insulated and will not protect against electrical shock, so it never replaces switching power off.
  • Check your manual for the screw sizes your model uses; some appliances use metric fasteners.
Safety firstSwitch off power before using any tool inside a panel.

Capacitors can hold a charge after the power is off. Safety terms.
